Sleep
Building a calm bedtime routine
Simple, repeatable evening rituals help babies wind down — and safe-sleep basics every parent should know.

Babies thrive on predictability. A short, calm routine at the same time each evening signals that the day is ending and sleep is coming. It doesn’t need to be long — 20 to 30 minutes is plenty.
A routine you can repeat
- Dim the lights and lower the noise about an hour before bed.
- Warm bath or a gentle wash, then fresh pyjamas or a sleep sack.
- Feed, then a quiet cuddle.
- Book or lullaby — the same one each night becomes a cue for sleep.
- Into the cot drowsy but awake, so your baby learns to settle.
Safe sleep basics
For every sleep, day and night, place your baby on their back in their own cot or Moses basket, on a firm, flat mattress with a fitted sheet. Keep the cot clear of pillows, bumpers, soft toys and loose bedding. Keep the room smoke-free and at a comfortable temperature, and avoid overheating. Sharing your room — but not your bed — for the first six months is recommended.
Night feeds
Young babies need to feed at night. Keep night feeds calm and dim, with little talking or play, so your baby learns that night-time is for sleeping. If you are concerned about your baby’s sleep or feeding, speak with your healthcare professional.
